The Centaurs are an independent and self-sufficient rugby
organization, which has had a presence in Grande Prairie since
1984. The clubhouse and changing facility are owned outright,
and a longstanding lease with the City of Grande Prairie, for
the use of the playing field, has allowed the club to modify
and maintain the field for the use of rugby since the club’s
inception.
The club enjoys a long history of strong volunteerism in the
City. Volunteer projects have included the 1995 Canada Games,
RCMP Children’s Festival, Stompede, and Bud Country.
More recently, the club hosted the rugby part of the 2000
Alberta Summer Games, held in Grande Prairie. The club committed
to seeing that the facilities were brought up to minimum standards,
according to the 2000 Alberta Summer Games Operations Manuel.
This involved extensive improvements to both clubhouse and
field area, as well has many hours of volunteer time from our
members. The overall outcome was a huge success and brought
junior rugby to the spotlight in Grande Prairie for the first
time.
The club boasts an active roster of over 60 members, and has
strong junior, women’s and men’s Programs. Currently,
the Centaurs field teams in the 1st and 2nd Division of the
Edmonton Rugby Union, a boys and girls junior side and an Old
Boy’s representative team.
In the meantime, the Centaurs continue to offer excellent
hospitality to visiting teams throughout the ERU as well as
perform to high standards on the field.
